American Cancer Society offering grants for new investigators’ research programs

The Indiana University Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center encourages eligible researchers to apply for funds from the American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant that help beginning investigators initiate their independent cancer research program.

The funding supports new pilot projects to assist new IU investigators who hold the rank of assistant professor, research assistant professor or assistant scientist. They must be within six years of their first independent research or faculty appointment but without an active national competitive research grant, regardless of the topic.

The purpose of the program is to attract new investigators from Indiana University into research and support new pilot studies that will produce preliminary data for the investigator to develop into studies that will compete successfully for external, national funds from both federal and private sources.

Faculty from the IU School of Medicine and its regional campuses, School of Nursing, School of Dentistry, School of Optometry, O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, School of Health and Human Sciences, School of Public Health-Bloomington, Fairbanks School of Public Health, School of Liberal Arts, McKinney School of Law, Maurer School of Law, School of Science, and Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering are especially encouraged to apply.

Proposals must describe new pilot studies in cancer research. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or submit a copy of their visa with the application, and the visa must allow the applicant to remain in the U.S. long enough to complete the pilot project.

Applicants with prior funding from the American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant or with significant funding from other sources are not eligible. Applicants are encouraged to check their funding status with Crystal Baker at crybanks@iu.edu before starting an application.

Funding is available for three pilot projects beginning Jan. 1, 2025, in amounts up to $50,000.

The notice of intent submission deadline is Oct. 2, and completed applications are due Oct. 21.
