Indiana University is seeking a faculty member to serve as a Faculty Fellow in the Office of the President. The Board of Trustees approved President Pamela Whitten’s request to establish the position at its June meeting. This new two-year appointment is ideal for an established IU faculty member interested in contributing to campus and university-wide academic leadership and administration at the highest levels.

The Faculty Fellow will serve as a liaison between the faculty and senior university leaders, ensuring the faculty perspective is integrated into critical administrative discussions and decision-making. The person will work closely with the University Faculty Council and Whitten to advance the institution and fulfill the IU 2030 strategic plan.

Applications should be submitted by Sept. 25, 2024, to iupres@iu.edu and include the name of the faculty member, campus location, curriculum vitae and letter of interest. Responsibilities include:

  • Facilitating communication and collaboration between faculty and senior leaders.
  • Providing leadership on focused projects supporting university strategic needs.
  • Participating in senior leadership meetings and consulting with the president on various issues.

“Here at IU, we are dedicated to fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment that supports the success of our faculty,” Whitten said. “I look forward to the role this Faculty Fellow will play in creating an environment where faculty can continue to thrive and contribute to the university’s mission.”

The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, experience engaging with multiple constituencies and a commitment to shared governance.

As the inaugural Faculty Fellow begins the new role in fall 2024, the university will buy out 10 percent of the faculty member’s time to help further design the role and set up the new office. Beginning in January 2025, the position is intended to be full time, but flexibility will be provided for the Faculty Fellow to serve in a less-than-full-time capacity, so they may tend to existing or continued teaching and/or research obligations and pursuits. The faculty member’s home department will receive funding to buy out their salary for the two-year appointment.

The appointment presents an opportunity for a faculty member to increase their understanding of university-wide initiatives, strategic planning and leadership roles, while contributing to the advancement of the university.
