Ten Indiana University Bloomington faculty were selected to participate in two programs through the Big Ten Academic Alliance Leadership Institute, which provides skills-based and strategically focused training for both emerging and seasoned leaders in higher education.

“The Big Ten Academic Alliance offers fantastic professional development opportunities for our campus leaders,” said Carrie Docherty, vice provost for faculty and academic affairs. “These leaders already do so much for our campus, and I look forward to seeing the amazing ways they shape the future of IU.”

Five department chairs were chosen for the Departmental Executive Officer Program, a three-day seminar involving more than 60 department heads and chairs from across the Big Ten:

  • Anke Birkenmaier, chair of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese in the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Erik Gonzalez-Mule, chair of the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship in the Kelley School of Business.
  • Jessica Steinberg, chair of the Department of International Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • Ayana Smith, chair of the Department of Musicology in the Jacobs School of Music.
  • Johan Bollen, chair of the Department of Informatics in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering.

The Departmental Executive Officer Program covers topics such as time management, faculty development, performance reviews and group problem-solving.

Five faculty were identified for the Academic Leadership Program, which develops the leadership skills of professors who might pursue careers in academic administration:

  • William Ramos, associate professor and director of the Aquatics Institute in the School of Public Health-Bloomington and president-elect of the Bloomington Faculty Council.
  • Apu Kapadia, professor of computer science and associate dean for graduate studies in the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering.
  • Bryan Orthel, associate professor and director of the Interior Design Program in the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design.
  • Dan Li, professor of international business and the executive associate dean for faculty and academic affairs in the Kelley School of Business.
  • Vivian Halloran, professor of English and American studies, and associate dean for diversity and inclusion, and arts and humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Academic Leadership Program, now in its 35th year, specifically focuses on training emerging leaders on how to address the complex challenges of academic administration at research-intensive universities.
