Faculty: IU Bookstore 101

Heads up, faculty and others who order course materials: Don’t forget that IU has a new bookstore operator and, as such, a new process for ordering books.

The background: In June, IU bookstores across the state except for IU Fort Wayne transitioned from being operated by Barnes & Noble to being operated by Follett Higher Education Group.

What does that mean? The change includes several service enhancements, such as a streamlined course materials process, upgrades to the online IU store and updates to physical retail locations on the IU Bloomington, IUPUI and regional campuses. For example, on the Bloomington campus, all three floors of the bookstore are now open year-round, and there is additional student lounge space, including near the historic Lincoln fireplace on the third floor.

How do I order course materials? The IU bookstores are still accepting orders for fall semester. If you haven’t already submitted your course material adoptions for your class, do so immediately. Faculty and others who order course materials should submit their order via the Follett Discover portal, which can be found by searching “Order Textbooks/Course Materials (Faculty)” inside One.IU. A few reminders:

  • If you are signed into One.IU, your assigned course(s) will display when you launch the adoption tool. Click the top of each unique course tile to make selections for that course.
  • You can use the global search in the upper right-hand corner to find course materials and supplies by keyword, author, title or 13-digit ISBN number. Or, you can type in a subject to discover new materials.
  • Once everything is set, click “adopt” to submit your course selections.

What if I still need help? Follett has several demo videos intended to help you better understand the process. If you still have questions about course materials or need assistance, review an FAQ or email IU@bkstr.com.

How fast will my students get their course materials? Students on all campuses can order their textbooks on the bookstore website. Course materials can also be purchased in the IU bookstore on every campus except the Bloomington campus.

Course materials for IU Bloomington students are kept at an off-site warehouse and have to be ordered online. Bookstore orders will be fulfilled as quickly as possible, but plan ahead and allow up to 48 hours for an order to be ready.
